Glass travel ware

A tea room in your carry-on — for the road

Travel kits built for the working sommelier: a borosilicate gaiwan, a sharing pitcher, and two cups, all nested inside a fitted case. Designed for visual brewing on trains, in hotel rooms, or between restaurant consulting stops. Minimal, durable, and fast to pack — nothing rattles, everything breathes.

Glass that travels

The first travel tea kit wasn’t a product — it was a habit. Sommeliers moving between cities would wrap a gaiwan in a napkin and hope for the best. Today that optimism has shape: a case that fits a full glass brewing set, leaving room for a few grams of dancong and a folded tasting spoon. Glass matters because on the road, you lose the luxury of a fixed lighting setup. The transparency of borosilicate gives you an honest window into the leaf — the first unfurling, the colour of a steep, the way the tea dances inside the gaiwan. Our kits are built around the idea that a 10-minute session on a folding table can feel as composed as service in a dining room.

We work with Sandry Law, a small workshop that treats travel cases the way bespoke tailors treat a suit. Their canvas is stiff enough to protect glass but soft enough to compress into a daypack. The leather deluxe patinas over the years, recording a career in scuffs and tea stains. Each kit is tuned to a specific rhythm: the small canvas for minimalist packs, the leather deluxe for client-facing calm, the pair edition for when you’re teaching someone on the move. You’ll find the full ritual of gōngfū chá condensed into 400 grams and a leather buckle. For the technique behind that ritual, our professional tea service course at tea.school walks through water temperature, pour timing, and palate calibration — the skills that turn a travel kit into a portable tasting room. And if you’re curious about the gear that lives alongside glass, tea.equipment has a dedicated section on gongfu ware that complements these kits beautifully.

Three ways to carry your craft

Each kit shares the same core — one glass gaiwan, one pitcher, two cups — but the case changes the character. Choose by how you travel, not just what you brew.

A buyer's note

What to look for in a glass travel kit

Check the glass thickness

Borosilicate glass should be between 1.5 and 2 mm for the gaiwan body. Too thin and it's fragile; too thick and heat transfer stalls your pour control.

Case material sets the mood

Canvas is lightweight and machine-washable — ideal for trains and daily use. Leather adds protection and a subtle professional formality; it's the right choice when you're serving clients.

Size the kit to your session

The small kit holds a 100 ml gaiwan, perfect for solo sessions. The pair edition adds a second set of cups without increasing the footprint — it's a compact duo for side-by-side tasting.

Check the closure system

A good case has either a full-length zipper or a sturdy buckle. Avoid velcro — it collects tea dust and loses grip over time.

Clean with soft cloth only

Glass travel kits don't need soap. Rinse with hot water and wipe dry with a microfibre. For the leather case, a damp cloth and natural conditioner keep it supple.

Match tea to transparency

Glass is at its best with teas that reward the eye: *dancong* that swirls, jasmine pearls that bloom, or a *shēng pǔ'ěr* whose colour shifts steep by steep. The travel kit becomes a mobile stage.

Common questions

Asked, answered.

Can I use these kits for any tea?

They're best for teas that benefit from visual brewing — oolongs, white teas, green teas — but they work for any loose-leaf tea. Heavily rolled oolongs and blooming teas are especially beautiful.

Is borosilicate glass safe for boiling water?

Yes, borosilicate withstands thermal shock up to around 150°C. Our gaiwan and pitcher are designed for off-the-boil water without cracking.

How padded are the travel cases?

The canvas case has 6 mm of closed-cell foam lining; the leather deluxe uses 8 mm leather-lined padding. Both protect against drops from table height onto hard surfaces.

What if I break one piece?

We sell replacement pieces individually for all three kits. Check the item page for the compatibility chart or reach out to our support team.

Are the cups double-walled?

No — single-wall 60 ml cups. They're sized for gongfu service and cool quickly to let you read the tea's aroma at every temperature.

Can I fit a fairness pitcher in the pair edition?

The pair edition includes one pitcher and two cups inside the case, along with the gaiwan. There's no extra room for a second pitcher — it's designed for two-person sharing with one shared vessel.

Is the leather deluxe case waterproof?

Leather is naturally water-resistant but not submersible. Spills wipe away easily, but avoid leaving the case in standing water. The canvas version can be treated with an optional silicone spray.
